Frequently Asked Questions

What’s massage therapy?

Massage therapy improves circulation by bringing oxygen and other nutrients to body tissues. In general, therapists press, rub, and otherwise manipulate the muscles and other soft tissues of the body. They most often use their hands and fingers, but may use their forearms and elbows.

What are the benefits of massage?

Massage relieves muscle tension and pain, increases flexibility and mobility, and helps clear lactic acid and other waste, which reduces pain and stiffness in muscles and joints. Regular massage helps your general health and wellbeing.

Massage can improve the quality of your life in the following areas:

  • Assists in stress management and relaxation.
  • Pain relief for musculoskeletal injuries and tension headaches.
  • Reduces anxiety and depression.
  • Reduces blood pressure and heart rate.
  • The release of endorphins and serotonin can prevent fibrosis or scar tissue, increase the flow of lymph, and improve sleep.

What can I expect during and after a massage treatment?

You will be asked some questions, sometimes may be required to do some movements to assess your current health condition.   Massage therapists then plan the massage treatments to suit your needs. Massage will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a massage table. Most massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed. However you should undress to your level of comfort. We encourage all clients to wear underwear during treatment. You will be properly draped during the entire session. Please communicate to the therapist if you feel uncomfortable.

A massage session usually takes 30-60 minutes.  It can be a full body massage or a targeted area of tension or soreness will be massaged, working the individual muscles specifically. After the massage session, therapist will leave the room for you to get dressed. You should get up slowly from the bed, and have plenty of water after the massage to flush the toxin out from your system. You might experience some soreness in the body for the next two days which is quite common. If you are uncertain about anything, please contact us immediately. Massage therapists will discuss your situation and schedule your next visit if needed.

Can I use massage in conjunction with other treatments?

Yes, you can.  In fact, massage therapists work closely together with Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Acupuncturists and other medical practitioners. Massage therapy can complement medical treatments.  If in doubt, please confirm with your doctor.

Why is it important to go to a licensed massage therapist?

Choosing an unqualified massage therapist means you may run the risk of making an existing injury or physical condition worse. At Kitsu-Mi, our fully accredited massage therapists have a detailed knowledge of the body's soft tissue and musculoskeletal systems. They'll ask about any medical histories you may have and provide a massage that's suitable to your health needs and helps you achieve optimum wellbeing.
